momisland1 One of my favorite songs is the Simon and Garfunkel song “I am a Rock,” a song I always felt represented me.

“I have my books and my poetry to protect me. I am shielded in my armor. Hiding in my room, safe within my womb I touch no one and no one touches me.” Well, then I up and decided to have kids, and now there is no way I am “an island.” I’m sure a lot of mothers will agree with me on this one - there is nowhere for us to hide and all day long we are touched: People, toys, grubby fingers, dirty diapers and crushed cheerios et cetera.

toni_smithOnce in a while, it would be nice to have a break; All we ask for is a few moments of peace and quiet. Each year, we get one day, that’s right, one day, Mother’s Day. We’re cooked breakfast in bed, handed homemade cards and sometimes given beautiful gifts. But then the day ends and we all go back to our daily grind. Maybe, just maybe, instead of giving us a much needed break once a year, our loved ones could make a small effort to help us every day. So my suggestion is, if you really want to make your mom, wife, sister or friend happy this Mother’s Day, offer to do a couple of chores around the house that will make her life a thousand times easier.

momisland2 If you get a minute, after you’ve enjoyed your carefully prepared dinner, take a second to check the dishwasher. I can almost guarantee that the dishes in the dishwasher are clean, so take the time to put the dishes away, because those other dirty dishes in the sink aren’t going to get washed until the dishwasher is empty. I can’t tell you how awesome it is to wake up in the morning and open the dishwasher, only to realize it’s been emptied by happy elves. It makes the day so much easier and then the sink will get clean. A clean sink makes a big difference in a mom’s day.

momisland3 Having clean socks is also a great thing. We know this, and we toil all day to bring you those crisp, white beauties. But once they are folded, they will sit in the laundry basket until some force of nature magically transports the basket upstairs to the bedroom. You can help this process out by putting your clothing away when you see the basket sitting outside the laundry room. Kill two birds with one stone; she won’t have to hear you whine that you don’t have socks and you’ll keep the laundry room neat by getting rid of clutter.

momisland4 In addition, the garbage can isn’t going to empty itself, ever. Kids are messy, especially if they are in diapers and the pail will easily fill up in one day. So, just once, empty the can without being asked, then when the diaper from hell is about to be disposed of, there will be room in the bag. It will also improve the smell that comes from the kitchen, so when you open the door, you’ll be able to smell the beef stroganoff, not the other yucky stuff.

Lastly, play with the kids. They miss you, they want to see you and they want to run around the dining room with you, for hours at a time. Giving Mom even 15 minutes of child-free time is going to go over far better than a box of chocolates and flowers, though those help too. You entertaining the kids translates to her sitting on the couch and channel surfing. Maybe she could even get five minutes alone in the bathroom, something she doesn’t get to do all day long.

Whatever you decide to do this Mother’s Day, remember the lady you are celebrating works very hard, even if you can’t see all of her work. She isn’t an island, she needs your help, and she deserves more than one day of honor, so helping her out all year round will make you feel just as good as she does. Though, gift certificates for spa days and truffles won’t hurt your cause either.
